The Learned Cat Siberians

TICA-registered hypoallergenic Siberian cats and kittens in North Austin, Texas

The cattery

Raised in our arms.

Siberians are a slow-maturing northern forest cat — large-boned, water-resistant, and famously companionable. At The Learned Cat we raise a small number of kittens each year in our home. They are handled from the first days, used to ordinary household noise, and stay with us until they are ready to travel: vaccinated and microchipped.

We place kittens thoughtfully with families we can stand behind. Our lines come from top breeders in Russia and Eastern Europe, and several of our cats have been therapy animals.

After Pushkin

A green oak by the cove

There is a green oak by the cove;
a golden chain upon the oak;
and a learned cat, both day and night,
walks round and round that chain.
To the right — a song. To the left — a tale.

The prologue to Ruslan and Ludmila is the cattery’s namesake. Our emblem is that cat: a bimetallic Siberian with green eyes, circling the oak.

The Siberian Breed

A forest cat, built for company.

Siberians are the native longhair of Russia: a large, slow-maturing cat with a triple coat and a habit of following the person they have chosen.

  • Triple coat

A dense down, a longer awn, and water-resistant guard hair. The ruff and britches fill out with the season.

  • Slow to finish

Bone and coat keep developing for three to five years. A kitten is only the outline of the adult.

  • Substantial build

Medium-large to large, with a broad chest, strong hindquarters, and a full, fox-like tail.

  • The face

A modified wedge, high cheekbones, and large, slightly oval eyes. Ears are medium, often tufted.

  • In the house

Affectionate and dog-like. They greet you, walk with you, and would rather be in the room than alone.

  • Many colors

Nearly every color and pattern is accepted, including bimetallic, black smoke, seal point, and mackerel tabby.

Lower allergen, from the saliva

The protein most people react to, Fel d 1, is carried in a cat’s saliva. Siberians tend to produce less of it than other breeds, which is why they are kept as a hypoallergenic cat. No cat is allergen-free, but a lower level in the saliva is the difference many allergic homes notice.

Siberian · silver & golden

Danilov · Bimetallic

Mostly white and silver, with golden accents.

Our bimetallics are tabbies washed in white and silver, then golden on the ears, saddle, and tail. Danilov is the cat of the cattery emblem — the learned cat beside Pushkin’s golden chain — and the color we return to when a pairing allows.

Eyes · Green

Siberian · colorpoint

Boris · Seal Point

Ivory body, seal-brown mask, and a clear blue gaze.

Seal point Siberians carry the colorpoint pattern on the breed’s triple coat: a warm cream body with rich dark points on the mask, ears, legs, and tail. The points deepen with age. Blue eyes are expected. Boris is a substantial, plush cat, not a Siamese silhouette.

Siberian · smoke

Ursa · Black Smoke

Charcoal on the surface. Silver when the coat parts.

Black smoke Siberians wear a dark tipping over a pale silver-white undercoat. At rest Ursa reads as a midnight cat; when the ruff moves, the silver flashes. The look is dramatic without being solid black.

Eyes · Green-gold

Siberian · brown mackerel

Esenia · Mackerel Tabby

Narrow vertical stripes, a bold forehead M, and forest color.

Esenia wears the mackerel tabby pattern — narrow vertical stripes, not the wide blotches of a classic. Warm golden-brown ground color, black-brown marking, and the lynx-tipped ears of a northern forest cat.
